A 21-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of a 19-year-old in Espoo, Finland, after a court ruled the stabbing attack was “exceptionally brutal,” Finnish public broadcaster Yle reports.

The Western Uusimaa District Court found Romeo Elias Leino guilty of murdering the victim in a shared home in Espoo’s Nöykkiö district on November 21, 2024. The attack occurred after Leino discovered the victim sleeping on a sofa with his former girlfriend.

Leino selected a long-bladed kitchen knife and fatally stabbed the victim, inflicting 59 slash and stab wounds. While the court deemed the crime “particularly cruel in its entirety,” it rejected the prosecution’s claim of “exceptional cruelty,” finding no evidence the killing was deliberately prolonged to increase suffering.

The court ordered Leino to pay nearly €30,000 in compensation to the victim’s family. The ruling is not yet final and may be appealed.

The case was previously reported in February 2026, when authorities disclosed that jealousy over the victim’s presence in the home was the suspected motive.
