Vuokatti-Jukola orienteering event brings millions in revenue to Sotkamo and Kainuu
The 2026 Vuokatti-Jukola relay, one of the world’s largest orienteering events, is expected to generate significant economic benefits for the Sotkamo municipality and the wider Kainuu region, according to a report by Finnish public broadcaster Yle.
Previous editions of the event have shown substantial financial impact. The 2025 Mikkeli-Jukola relay brought in an estimated €5–7 million in spending within the event area alone, with an additional €2.5 million spent on services outside the competition zone. Similarly, the annual Kainuu Orienteering Week, held in July, contributes around €2–3 million to its rotating host municipalities through related activities.
Local businesses are being encouraged to engage with the event to maximise regional benefits. Organisers are urging visitors to extend their stays and utilise accommodation services, including cabins, hotels, and private lodgings in Vuokatti. Event director Sami Leinonen emphasised the importance of sourcing supplies and services locally, calling it a “responsible choice” for organisers.
Sotkamo’s mayor, Mika Kilpeläinen, highlighted the municipality’s expertise in hosting large-scale sporting events, noting that Vuokatti-Jukola reinforces the region’s reputation as a hub for sports and outdoor activities. Sotkamo, recently named Finland’s most active municipality for physical activity, has extensive experience in organising both domestic and international competitions.
The event is supported by the municipality, which provides venues, skilled personnel, and collaborative partnerships to ensure its success.
