Finland’s supreme court upholds life sentence for McDonald’s ex-partner murder
Finland’s Supreme Court has rejected a final appeal from a man convicted of murdering his ex-wife in a Helsinki McDonald’s, upholding his life imprisonment sentence, public broadcaster Yle reports.
Dimitri Allan Lindberg, born in 1994, was previously found guilty by both a district court and an appeals court for the fatal stabbing of his 21-year-old former spouse on 6 April 2024. The attack occurred in the Pitäjänmäki branch of the fast-food chain, where the couple’s infant was present during the assault. The victim died shortly afterward in the restaurant’s vestibule.
Courts ruled that Lindberg acted with premeditation and committed the murder in an “exceptionally brutal” manner. While the appeals court acknowledged elements of cruelty, it did not classify the act as “particularly cruel” under Finnish law, though it deemed the crime aggravated overall.
Lower courts had already sentenced Lindberg to life in prison, Finland’s most severe penalty. The Supreme Court’s refusal to grant leave to appeal means the conviction is now final.
