The Faroe Islands’ new foreign and fisheries minister, Bárður á Steig Nielsen, will prioritise negotiating a free trade agreement with the European Union, he announced on Monday, according to Faroese broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya.
Nielsen, leader of the Union Party, stated that securing a broad trade deal with the EU and other countries would be his first objective. “A free trade agreement with the EU and other nations is what I will focus on first,” he said.
The minister also expressed satisfaction with the newly formed coalition government, describing the broad collaboration as essential for implementing major policy changes. “A broad coalition is the only way to achieve significant reforms when you have a strong foundation in parliament,” he added. “I am very pleased that this has succeeded.”
