Implementing menstrual products in the facilities at Setrið, a school in the Faroe Islands, is projected to cost the institution several hundred thousand kroner annually. However, if Setrið takes the lead in this initiative, it is expected to create pressure on other educational institutions to follow suit.

Martin Tvede Zachariassen, the rector, expressed support for the student unions’ proposal, stating, “Personally, I believe it is a very sympathetic suggestion. However, I think this is a larger principled issue that the political system in the Faroe Islands should address.”

Furthermore, Zachariassen noted that Setrið has reached out to the Ministry of Children and Education regarding this matter, and the response indicated that menstrual products fall under the study grants provided to students. This means that students would have to fund their own menstrual products themselves.

As discussions continue, the conversation around accessibility and support for students’ needs is becoming increasingly vital in the educational landscape of the Faroe Islands.
