Faroese coalition leader confirms he will become prime minister
The leader of the Faroese People’s Party, Beinir Johannesen, has confirmed he will serve as prime minister in a new coalition government between the People’s Party, Union Party, and Social Democratic Party, Faroese public broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya reports.
Johannesen, who led the coalition negotiations, made the announcement after finalising the government agreement and policy platform with Union Party leader Bárður á Steig Nielsen and Social Democratic Party leader Aksel V. Johannesen. The full details of the agreement will be made public at a press conference on Thursday morning.
Both Nielsen and Aksel V. Johannesen expressed satisfaction with the outcome but declined to comment on specifics before the official announcement. They confirmed their parties are prepared to enter government if their respective factions approve the deal.
The new coalition follows weeks of negotiations after the Faroese parliamentary election. The three party leaders met on Wednesday to finalise the agreement’s wording before its public release.
