A fire that broke out on Monday night in Vaasa, Finland caused extensive damage to an apartment on the ground floor of a three-story building. The fire occurred in a district called Teeriniemi, a few kilometers away from the city center of Vaasa.

At the time the fire started, the three-room apartment with a kitchen was unoccupied. The residents had been out and returned to find smoke pouring out when they opened the front door. They promptly closed the door and called the emergency services.

Smoke divers located the fire’s origin in a laundry basket situated in the corner of a bedroom and quickly extinguished the flames. When they arrived, the apartment was filled with heavy smoke and high temperatures. Smoke had also spread into the stairwell.

The chief fire officer, Riikka Oravainen, said that if a few more minutes had passed, the fire could have spread much further. It was also fortunate that none of the building’s residents entered the stairwell.

According to Oravainen, the apartment is currently uninhabitable. Signs of the fire can be seen in the corner of the bedroom, on the wall, and in the bed. The ceiling lights have melted due to the heat and the entire apartment has smoke damage. The stairwell also had to be ventilated.

The exact cause of the fire is under investigation.
