Faroese coalition parties aim to form government by next week

The three largest parties in the Faroe Islands have begun coalition negotiations, with the goal of forming a government before April 10, according to Faroese public broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya.

Leaders from the People’s Party (Fólkaflokkurin), Union Party (Sambandsflokkurin), and Social Democratic Party (Javnaðarflokkurin) held initial talks on Monday, with party leaders meeting in the morning and lawmakers reconvening in the evening. Negotiations will resume on Tuesday.

Beinir Johannesen, leader of the People’s Party and chief negotiator, described the discussions as progressing well. Lawmakers have been divided into four working groups focusing on infrastructure, public affairs, health, and energy and environmental issues.

Political scientist Sólvit Nolsøe provided analysis of the talks during a television broadcast.
