Several injured in head-on collision on icy road in Nittedal
Several people were injured early Monday morning after two cars collided head-on in Nittedal, Akershus, reports Dagbladet. Emergency services described the scene as extremely icy, with all involved taken to hospital for assessment.
The crash occurred at the entrance to the Hagantunnel on national road Rv4. Police confirmed it was a frontal collision, with five people transported by ambulance for medical checks. No injuries were reported as life-threatening.
“Ambulances are on site and report significant material damage. All involved are out of the vehicles, and no one is critically injured. Conditions are very slippery,” operations manager Terje Askautrud of the Øst Police District wrote in the police log.
By 6:55 AM, recovery vehicles had arrived, but the tunnel remained closed pending gritting. “The traffic control centre will not reopen the tunnel until the road has been treated,” police stated.
While the regional traffic control centre had not received widespread reports of icy conditions, operator Turid Nyman noted that localised slippery patches were possible. “It’s worth keeping in mind that icy conditions can still occur, especially given yesterday’s weather forecast of snow and sleet in some areas,” she said.
The Hagantunnel on Rv4 was temporarily shut as crews awaited salt trucks. Both vehicles involved in the collision have since been removed.
Meteorologists have warned of highly variable Easter weather across Norway, with alternating snow, rain, and sunshine expected throughout the week.
