A woman in western Finland who was stripped of her cattle and banned from keeping livestock due to animal welfare violations will be allowed to retain her animals while her appeal is processed, the Vaasa Court of Appeal has ruled.

The decision overturns a March ruling by Satakunta District Court, which had sentenced the woman in her 50s to a five-year ban on keeping production animals and ordered the forfeiture of her cattle to the state. The district court also imposed 50 day-fines for neglecting the welfare of dozens of cattle, causing them unnecessary suffering through pain, hunger, thirst, and cold exposure.

The Court of Appeal determined that enforcing the forfeiture at this stage could cause irreversible harm, rendering the appeal process meaningless. It cited “particularly weighty reasons” for suspending the penalty until the case is resolved or further ordered.

The woman’s original conviction stemmed from failing to ensure the well-being of her herd, though the appellate court has not yet ruled on the merits of her challenge.
