Oil accounted for nearly 90 percent of the Faroe Islands’ total energy consumption in 2025, according to a new report from the Faroese Environment Agency.

The agency’s figures show that oil made up 88.2 percent of energy use last year, with only 9–10 percent coming from renewable sources such as water, wind, biogas, and solar power. Total energy consumption remained steady at around 4,000 gigawatt-hours, roughly the same as in 2024.

Transportation was the largest consumer of energy, responsible for 43.8 percent of total use, primarily through oil-dependent vehicles. While the number of electric cars has now reached 3,000, road transport continues to rely overwhelmingly on fossil fuels.

Heating oil consumption has declined significantly over the past 15–20 years, dropping from 50,000 tonnes to 33,000 tonnes—a 34 percent reduction—despite a 20 percent population increase in the same period. Electricity production in 2025 totalled 506 gigawatt-hours, with heat pumps contributing 126 gigawatt-hours for heating.

The share of renewable energy in electricity generation fell slightly from 53 percent to 51 percent, partly due to no new wind turbines being added.
