The Central Finland Police have launched a criminal investigation into a Jyväskylä-based gym suspected of defrauding elderly customers through aggressive sales tactics, public broadcaster Yle reports.

Around 20 cases have been reported to police, where the company allegedly contacted elderly individuals via phone or social media, selling rehabilitation services and gym memberships. Many victims believed the calls were from a hospital or medical provider.

Customers described the sales process as misleading and pressured, with contracts often signed under false pretenses. Memberships reportedly cost thousands of euros annually, and some who signed immediately sought to cancel but struggled to reach the company or terminate agreements.

The investigation is ongoing, with fraud as the primary suspected offense, though charges may evolve. Police are also examining potential contract law violations.

Authorities urge caution when signing service agreements. “A legitimate seller will never pressure you and will give you time to consider,” said Detective Chief Inspector Paavo Ritari in a statement. Police advise reviewing cancellation terms and consulting trusted individuals before committing.

Victims are encouraged to file a police report if they suspect fraud. The investigation remains active, with no further details released at this stage.
