This morning, at around 8 a.m., tourists reported a landslide that had fallen onto the Reykjastrandarveg road in Skagafjörður, near Grettislaug. The road had to be temporarily closed, but cleanup proceeded smoothly, according to contractors.

A yellow weather alert has been in effect in the region since midnight due to heavy rainfall over the last 24 hours, which resulted in a landslide approximately fifty meters long. As a consequence, very few visitors could be found in the rain-soaked campsites in the northern part of the country today.

Tourists traveling along Reykjastrandarveg at around 8 a.m. reported the slide. Contractor Gústaf Bentsson stated that the cleanup went well. “I was able to open one lane for traffic within thirty minutes. However, I’ll be working on it for quite a while,” said Gústaf, who arrived with a digger around 9 a.m. to clear the road. The initial cleanup allowed the road to reopen for traffic, although contractors indicated that a more thorough clean-up would have to wait for the weather to improve.

The Reykjastrandarveg road experiences heavy daily traffic from both cyclists and pedestrians, many of whom are on their way to the popular tourist destination of Grettislaug in Skagafjörður.

In the Troll Peninsula region, the number of visitors at campsites was significantly low. In Ólafsfjörður, the campsite was closed due to wet conditions, and international guests were advised to seek indoor accommodation if needed. The Sauðárkrókur campsite was also sparse, with only a couple of small tents visible amidst the puddles.
