The Icelandic parliament, Alþingi, is currently debating two key issues: proposed reforms to the prison system and a bill on state compensation for referendum expenses, national broadcaster RÚV reports.

The prison reform discussion follows recent criticism of conditions in Icelandic correctional facilities, including overcrowding and concerns over rehabilitation programs. Lawmakers are reviewing proposals to modernise infrastructure and expand alternative sentencing options.

Separately, parliament is examining a bill that would establish state reimbursement for political parties and organisations covering costs related to campaigning during national referendums. The measure aims to increase transparency in referendum financing while ensuring broader public participation in direct democracy processes.

Both debates come as Iceland prepares for potential future referendums on constitutional and EU-related matters, though no specific votes have been scheduled. The prison reform discussion also aligns with ongoing reviews of Iceland’s criminal justice system, last updated in 2018.
