Trains resume service at Oslo Central Station but delays and cancellations expected
Trains have resumed operation at Oslo Central Station (Oslo S) after a full halt earlier Monday, infrastructure manager Bane Nor announced at 08:12, though passengers should still expect significant delays and cancellations.
The disruption began due to an earth fault in the signalling system at Oslo S, which contains around 160,000 relay contacts, Bane Nor’s press contact Anna Langhammer explained. Safety protocols require all traffic to stop while technicians locate the fault.
During the outage, all departures to and from Oslo S were cancelled, with trains turning back at outlying stations including Skøyen, Bryn, Ski, Lillestrøm, and Grefsen. Train operator Vy deployed 90 replacement buses, though communication director Åge-Christoffer Lundeby noted it would take time to fully mobilise the fleet.
“Oslo S is Norway’s largest railway hub,” Lundeby said. “When traffic stops here, it affects tens of thousands of daily commuters.” On an average day, the station serves several hundred thousand passengers, with peak demand during morning and evening rush hours.
Bane Nor advises travellers to monitor real-time updates via its Nå app, which provides the same information as station display boards. The incident follows a morning of chaos, with stranded commuters—including many at Lillestrøm station—forced to seek alternative transport.
