The Faroese Social Democratic Party (Javnaðarflokkurin) has unveiled its election manifesto ahead of the upcoming parliamentary vote, shifting focus from its previous signature policy of a shorter workweek to three core priorities: universal welfare, national solidarity, and economic fairness.

Party leader Aksel V. Johannesen presented the platform on Friday in a packed event at the party’s headquarters in Tórshavn. The 2022 election’s central pledge—a reduced workweek—was notably absent from his speech, though Johannesen later confirmed it remains part of the party’s broader policy framework. “It is no longer a cardinal point as it was before,” he stated, adding that further analysis is needed before implementation.

The manifesto’s top priority is ensuring universal access to welfare, framed by the party as a fundamental human right. “A safe home is a human right in the Faroe Islands,” Johannesen declared. The platform also emphasises tjóðarsemja (national unity), a principle the party credits with guiding its political cooperation in recent years.

Addressing economic inequality, the party leader warned that rising living costs risk pricing essential services out of reach for many. “When expenses grow, not everyone can afford what is necessary,” he said, underscoring the need for policies to mitigate financial strain on households.

The Social Democrats currently hold two seats in the Faroese Parliament (Løgtingið) and one in the Danish Folketing. The election will determine representation in both legislatures.
