Tuesday 10th 2024 on 11:13 in
Iceland

Amnesty International is set to debut the documentary “Vonarljós” at Bíó Paradís to mark International Human Rights Day, which is observed on December 10. The screening is free to the public, and everyone is encouraged to attend as long as space permits.

The documentary highlights the important work undertaken by the Icelandic branch of Amnesty International over its five decades of operation, coinciding with its 50th anniversary this year. The film offers a glimpse into the branch’s initiatives and its significance against the backdrop of various historical events. The screening begins at 7 PM.

In addition to the film showing, attendees will have the opportunity to sign support messages for victims of human rights violations as part of Amnesty International’s annual campaign, “Your Name Saves Lives.”

As a part of this campaign, nine individual cases of human rights abuse victims from around the world will be spotlighted this year. Notable individuals include a TikTok star from Angola and a women’s rights activist from Saudi Arabia.

To raise awareness for the campaign, several prominent buildings will be illuminated in yellow light on December 9 and 10. This color, associated with Amnesty International, symbolizes hope for victims facing human rights abuses. Notable structures such as Hallgrímskirkja, Harpa, Perlan, the Reykjavik City Hall, and Hof in Akureyri will join in this initiative, serving as a beacon for the importance of the ongoing fight for human rights.
