Finnish adults excel in reading and numeracy skills, outperforming OECD peers

A recent study has highlighted that Finnish adults excel in reading and numeracy skills compared to their peers in OECD countries. Improvements have been noted in both areas since the last assessment. The study also indicates that Finnish adults rank first in practical problem-solving skills, sharing this position with Japan.

Notably, the performance of Finnish youth in PISA assessments has declined, but this has not adversely affected the adult population’s skills. Gaps in skill levels between immigrants and the native population are more pronounced in Finland compared to other OECD nations, although these gaps narrow when taking language proficiency and educational background into account.

Results from the latest round of the Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC), often termed the “adult PISA,” indicate that Finnish adults achieved an average score of 296 points in reading compared to 273 in the previous assessment conducted over a decade ago. The OECD average has decreased to 260 points.

In numeracy, Finnish adults showed a similar upward trend, with average scores increasing to 294 from 282, while the OECD average fell to 263. A significant aspect of this finding is the minimal gender difference in literacy, with 14% of men scoring poorly compared to 10% of women.

The PIAAC results reflect ongoing investment in adult education in Finland, ensuring that individuals can continue to enhance their skills regardless of their educational background. This trend is unique among OECD members, spotlighting the positive outcomes of lifelong learning opportunities available in Finland.
