New recommendations for teacher training in Sweden emphasize grade requirements

In a bid to enhance the quality of teacher education, new recommendations propose that future teachers must have at least a grade C in Swedish, while preschool teacher candidates should obtain no less than a grade D. Peter Horneth, a former state secretary, presented the recommendations to education ministers earlier this week.

Horneth has identified a significant issue within teacher training programs, noting that an influx of students with insufficient prior knowledge leads to high dropout rates. He emphasized the necessity for rigorous subject knowledge and better teaching methodologies to ensure the competence of future educators.

The proposed measures come in response to the government’s directive for stricter admission criteria amid concerns over declining educational standards in Sweden. Education Minister Johan Pehrson highlighted the urgency of the situation, stating, “We do not see anything other than a collapse in knowledge levels.”

Although the new requirements are anticipated to reduce the number of incoming students, they are also expected to diminish dropout rates within teaching programs. Horneth explained that this is an opportune moment for these changes, as future enrollment is projected to decline.

Moreover, the recommendations suggest making teacher training more practical, emphasizing pedagogical skills over theoretical knowledge. This includes increasing training in reading and writing instruction for aspiring primary school teachers, alongside a focus on evidence-based teaching strategies and cognitive learning approaches. Additionally, the overall number of graduation goals is set to be reduced to streamline the educational process.
