Recent data indicates a concerning shift in alcohol consumption among underage youth, reversing a previously positive trend. Since the turn of the millennium, the rate of alcohol use among young people had been declining. However, recent statistics show an uptick in binge drinking among minors, with an increase in the number who drink weekly.

Researcher Kirsimarja Raitasalo notes several factors contributing to this change. A greater proportion of young people now perceive regular binge drinking as low-risk. She also points out that access to potent alcohol has become easier, and parental supervision of underage drinking appears to have decreased. In fact, many youths report receiving alcohol from their parents more frequently than before.

Furthermore, following a relaxation of regulations surrounding the sale of stronger ready-to-drink beverages, a rise in consumption among girls has been noted. Raitasalo warns that easing restrictions on alcohol delivery could exacerbate this problem, as easier access may lead to higher consumption levels.

In the years between 2013 and 2023, the percentage of girls experiencing both anxiety and high levels of binge drinking rose significantly. The link between mental health issues and substance abuse is becoming clearer, with some young people using alcohol as a coping mechanism.

Social pressures stemming from academic and work expectations can heighten anxiety, potentially driving some youths to alcohol. Interestingly, a third of ninth graders who consumed alcohol reported obtaining it from friends, while online avenues like Snapchat are emerging as new sources.

Local authorities express concern over the trend, emphasizing the need for ongoing programs to promote sobriety among youth.
