As the 2024 parliamentary elections approach, there seems to be no single major issue dominating the political discourse, according to a political scientist. Candidates are striving to distinguish themselves while also seeking potential coalition partners for a future government.

Eva Heiða Önnudóttir indicated that, unlike previous elections, the prominent topics have yet to emerge clearly in the current campaigning environment. Historically, last elections focused on whether voters desired changes to the ruling administration, with health care and economic issues taking center stage in elections held in 2016 and 2017. However, Eva Heiða believes the key themes for this election cycle are still hazy.

She pointed out that political parties are cautious in their responses regarding possible coalition negotiations. It is essential for voters to have clarity about the type of government certain parties envisage forming. Parties often express a desire to collaborate with those who share similar policy views, yet specific issues remain vague—whether they concern economic matters, immigration policies, or environmental issues.

The uniquely condensed timeline leading up to these elections has prompted parties to search for effective strategies to capture voter attention. Many parties are working to differentiate themselves from others that may share similar ideologies, even while considering coalition options. This election campaign has diverged from previous ones, with the initial weeks primarily focused on establishing candidate lists rather than substantive policy discussions.

Overall, as the election nears, the focus will likely sharpen on the pressing issues affecting voters’ livelihoods, economy, and housing.
