The rise in popularity of fragrances has sparked discussions in schools about their potential drawbacks. However, educational institutions have limited means to regulate students’ use of perfumes. While schools can promote a fragrance-free environment, there are no straightforward measurement methods or set limits to determine safe fragrance levels in the air.

Students Meea Männikkö and Inka Majava from Oulu’s Kellon School express that moderate fragrance use can boost confidence and has deeper personal significance. Männikkö explains that many young people grapple with insecurities, including how they smell, and that fragrances can enhance their self-image.

Recently, numerous schools in Oulu have had to remind students and parents about the importance of reducing fragrance use. This issue has also gained attention in other parts of Finland. Annukka Määttä, a home economics teacher at Kellon School, suffers from asthma and migraines. She recalls a severe asthma attack triggered by standing next to a student wearing strong perfume. Männikkö and Majava have also experienced headaches in crowded classrooms filled with powerful scents.

While schools can implement fragrance policies, they have no control over what students use at home. According to Sara Simberg, an expert from a teachers’ union, schools can engage in discussions about fragrance use, but enforcement is challenging since students can freely choose their personal care products.

There are currently no specific laws in the workplace restricting fragrance use, although employers must ensure a healthy work environment. If students or employees experience health issues related to fragrance, they should report it to their superiors, as employers have a legal responsibility to provide safe working conditions.
