Sverigedemokraterna demands government role in Sweden ahead of elections
The Sverigedemokraterna party has asserted its demand to enter the government if the right-wing coalition wins the upcoming election. Party leader Jimmie Åkesson has made it clear that continuing as a support party is not an option. However, the Liberalerna party has firmly rejected this notion. Johan Pehrson, the leader of the Liberals, stated, “I will not sit in a government with Jimmie Åkesson.” He acknowledged that the collaboration between the Tidö parties is functioning well but emphasized that the Liberals will not engage with Sverigedemokraterna in the same manner as they do with the Moderaterna and Kristdemokraterna.
When asked what would happen if the right-wing coalition secures a majority and Sverigedemokraterna remains insistent on their demands, Pehrson reiterated his position, stating, “I stand firm in my assessment.” He continued, “What happens then is that a government must be formed in some other way.” Pehrson clarified that the Liberals will not join a government that includes Sverigedemokraterna or support one where they have a role, and he does not foresee any change in this stance.
Currently, the political landscape suggests a clear division among the right-wing parties in Sweden regarding their coalition dynamics and potential government formation.
