This decision comes after a scandal in December 2023, when an external report exposed neglect and legal violations in several hundred child welfare cases. The Ministry of Social Affairs and Housing has described the situation as “extremely regrettable,” and the Danish National Appeals Authority is currently investigating whether there are grounds for initiating a supervisory case against Nyborg Municipality.

Hansen stated to a local news outlet that her resignation was due to “personal reasons.” Municipal Director Tim Jeppesen acknowledged Hansen’s decision but declined to provide further comments.
