Disappointing turnout at Vejle Municipality’s walking tour to address flooding issues
On Monday, Vejle Municipality organized a walking tour to address the areas in the city center that have been affected by flooding multiple times in 2024. The aim was to inform residents about measures being taken to manage water in extreme situations and to gather input on how to assist locals during flooding events. However, the turnout was disappointing; out of 25 available spots, only four registered, and only two attendees showed up. Local business owner Brian Kildebækgaard was the only resident present, alongside two municipal politicians.
Kildebækgaard expressed his surprise at the low turnout, particularly given the significant impact floods have had on the community. Nevertheless, he found some value in the walking tour and noted that the municipality is actively working to find solutions to the flooding issues. He raised concerns about water rising from sewers into his shop during the latest flooding and felt encouraged by discussions suggesting that solutions or dialogue could be developed to address these problems.
Prior to the event, the municipality had invited residents to share ideas for managing water during extreme weather. Paul Landsfeldt, the local flooding officer who led the tour, shared his disappointment at the lack of participation, hoping for more input from affected citizens to improve response strategies.
Søren Peschardt, chair of the Climate, Nature, and Environment Committee, expressed regret over the turnout but believes there is significant community engagement regarding flooding issues. He suggested that future events should be better publicized to encourage more residents to participate and contribute their insights.
