A mental health assessment has been completed for a man from Sievi, who is accused of murdering his father. The findings will be presented in a trial that continues today at the Oulu District Court.

The 40-year-old man fatally attacked his 82-year-old father in Sievi on October 28, 2023. According to the accused, the incident began when his father attempted to prevent him from leaving their residence. The man inflicted severe and varied violence on the elderly man, ultimately leaving him outside in freezing temperatures, injured. While the accused called emergency services, the father succumbed to his injuries.

The prosecution describes the act as particularly brutal, citing the use of a broken broomstick as a weapon, and is seeking a life sentence for the charge of murder.

The accused has acknowledged causing his father’s death but denies that the act constitutes murder. He admitted to the violence during initial police interrogations and provided a detailed account of the assault, stating he believed his father was a devil in disguise. “I then attacked and killed the evil,” he reportedly said, adding that he viewed the act as a form of purification akin to God defeating Satan.

The trial commenced last March, at which point the District Court determined the man acted as described in the charges and caused his father’s violent death. As part of the proceedings, he was ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation, which has now been completed. The court will deliver its opinion on the charges and the sentence based on these findings. The hearing is set to resume today at 8:30 AM in the Ylivieska session location. Further updates will follow.
