The case is being updated.

According to Snorre Haugdahl, Chief of Police for Innherred and Namdal, the defendant is the one most at risk. He mentioned that there are no specific reasons to believe anything will occur when the trial against Arne Bye starts today. Nevertheless, security measures have been heightened around the Trøndelag District Court in Steinkjer.

Bye, a former municipal chief physician, faces charges of abusing his position as a doctor to engage in sexual acts with 95 women, of whom 88 are charged with rape. He has admitted guilt to parts of the accusation.

The indictment against Bye, which became public on September 17, 2024, accuses him of violating Norway’s Penal Code by misusing his medical position. The alleged misconduct occurred during medical examinations from 2004 to 2022, often conducted at his office. In many cases, the examinations were filmed without the patients’ knowledge or consent.

Due to the sensitive nature of the case, the court has ruled that testimonies from the 95 women will be heard behind closed doors, although the press will be allowed to attend the entire proceedings. This trial is set to continue for 33 days as the women recount their experiences, primarily concerning alleged rapes during gynecological examinations.

The media plays a crucial role in this trial, capturing the process while being mindful of the vulnerabilities of the women testifying. Bye’s defense will begin shortly after the women have presented their cases. The trial is scheduled to conclude by February 18 of next year.
