Axel Staib, 79, has embarked on a 699-kilometer run from Moss to Trondheim in honor of his late friend and training partner, Øyvind. Despite taking up running just 12 years ago, Staib is a shining example that it’s never too late to start exercising.

Dorthe Stensvold, a professor in exercise physiology at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), finds Staib’s feat of completing almost 18 marathons in 18 days, especially at his advanced age, impressive.

Staib offers advice for those who wish to start running: “Just lace up your shoes, get out there, and start running, even if it feels heavy in the beginning.”

Staib and Øyvind used to run and cycle together, often embarking on extraordinary, fun adventures. Staib is currently making steady progress on his journey, covering the 699 kilometers from Moss to Trondheim to honor his friend who passed away last year. Despite occasional rain, he maintains that the journey is going well.

Staib’s journey takes him through many stages, with the longest being nearly 50 kilometers. He expects to reach Trondheim after 18 days on the road.

Staib started training for running 12 years ago, proving that it’s never too late to start exercising.

Stensvold commends Staib’s initiative and preparation and believes that regardless of age, completing almost 18 marathons in 18 days is an impressive feat. She emphasizes that to endure such a long run, substantial amounts of training over a long period are essential.

Staib encourages running slowly but often, and that the trips do not necessarily need to be long. He emphasizes the importance of overcoming the initial heaviness and discomfort, assuring that with time, it gets better.
