Katrín Jakobsdóttir appointed to lead new climate change and health committee in Reykjavík
Katrín Jakobsdóttir, the former Prime Minister of Iceland, has agreed to lead a new European committee on climate change and health under the World Health Organization (WHO). This announcement was made by Hans Kluge, the organization’s European director, during a meeting this week following his reelection.
Kluge highlighted the significant health risks posed by climate change and emphasized the necessity of adopting new strategies to tackle these threats. Establishing a Europe-wide committee on climate change and health is aimed at enhancing initiatives within healthcare systems across the continent. Kluge expressed enthusiasm about Jakobsdóttir’s willingness to take on this important role.
Should the WHO’s Executive Board approve the formation of this committee during its January meeting, it is expected to be established in Reykjavík in February.
