Former municipal manager of Humppila, Antti Ahonen, exits amid leadership behavior concerns in Finland
The departure of Antti Ahonen, the former municipal manager of Humppila in southern Finland, has drawn attention to discussions concerning his behavior as a leader. Earlier explanations for his departure cited inadequate financial expertise. Documents obtained by STT reveal that the municipal council discussed Ahonen’s conduct just a day before agreeing on his exit.
Although the formal decision to terminate Ahonen’s employment was made in August, discussions began as early as June 18, when council leaders met with him. On June 17, the council had addressed concerns regarding Ahonen’s behavior, notably a late-night incident where he showed up at employees’ doors around 11 PM. There are conflicting accounts regarding the precise sequence of events between Ahonen and the staff.
Humppila municipality has not disclosed details of the discussion about Ahonen’s conduct to residents. Kari Ahola, chairman of the municipal council, stated in August to Forssan Lehti that Ahonen lacked the necessary financial skills. Upon termination, Ahonen received a transition compensation equivalent to six months’ salary, totaling €41,400, as his monthly salary was €6,900. Ahola acknowledged the sum is substantial, but failing to pay the agreed compensation would have required “more serious circumstances.”
Currently, Ahonen works as the executive director of the Satakunta Coalition Party. He also serves as a city councilor in Hämeenlinna and a regional councilor in Kanta-Häme. In the 2021 municipal elections, he acted as the national campaign leader for the Coalition Party.
