The vocational education field in Finland is undergoing a notable shift, with dental technology programs emerging as the most popular occupational education track. This program has outperformed even leading high schools in terms of the number of primary applicants relative to the available spots.
For example, the aircraft mechanic program in Vantaa is highly sought after, offering international career opportunities, with average salaries nearing €3,900 for master’s level positions. The Turku Conservatory’s music technology program is another competitive option, boasting a mere one in six chance of admission.
Eighteen-year-old Vili Väisänen, a student at the Vantaa vocational school Varian, shared his experience of fielding repeated questions about his choice not to pursue high school. Despite high grades—he mentions a GPA of 9.5—he opted to follow his passion in aircraft maintenance.
The dental technician program leads the applicant rankings, drawing students from afar due to its unique offerings. It is exclusively available at Stadin Ammattiopisto in Malmi, attracting students willing to relocate hundreds of kilometers. Acceptance is based solely on their primary wish and previous academic performance, with no entrance exams.
In terms of salary, dental technicians earn starting salaries of about €2,013, with a reported average salary of €2,700 in 2022. The allure of the profession lies in the intricacy and detail required in the work.
The competitive landscape extends into the arts, where the Turku Conservatory has also made significant marks. Vocal and instrumental assessments test applicants, not based on prior grades. Many aspiring musicians continue to pursue higher education, understanding the lengthy road—15-20 years—before achieving a degree in music. Despite potential earnings varying from a few hundred to a few thousand euros monthly as freelancers, passion for music prevails among the students.
