As of today, the tobacco tax increases outlined in the government program have officially commenced. The tax on tobacco will rise in six phases over the next two and a half years, totaling an average increase of approximately 27.1 percent.
These tax hikes will apply to various tobacco products, including cigarettes, rolling tobacco, pipe tobacco, and cigars, as well as cigarillos. However, e-cigarette liquids and nicotine pouches will not be affected by these increases.
Currently, a pack of cigarettes priced at around ten euros is set to rise to approximately 13.2 euros once all the planned increases are implemented. The government aims to generate an estimated 100 million euros for the state treasury through these tobacco tax hikes. Additionally, during this spring’s budget session, an extra increase of 50 million euros in tobacco tax was approved.
