Members of the Icelandic Medical Association have overwhelmingly voted in favor of strike actions, with nearly 93% supporting the move during a ballot that concluded at 4 PM today. More than 83% of approximately 1,250 members participated in the vote. Unless an agreement is reached with the government before Monday, November 18, strikes will commence at midnight, impacting various medical facilities nationwide.

The planned strikes would last 24 hours at each participating location, including doctors employed by the state throughout Iceland. No meetings with negotiating committees were held today, although working groups convened in Karphús earlier in the afternoon.

This decision follows recent negotiations that apparently failed to produce a satisfactory outcome for the medical professionals involved. The potential strike highlights ongoing tensions in Iceland’s healthcare sector, illustrating the need for improved conditions and agreements for medical staff. Without a resolution, these strikes could significantly disrupt healthcare services across the country, raising concerns among the public regarding access to medical care.

As the deadline approaches, both parties are likely to engage in further discussions to avert the impending work stoppage. The outcome of these negotiations will be closely monitored, as they hold significant implications for both healthcare professionals and the population they serve.
