On Thursday, authorities announced the completion of a preliminary investigation into a significant sexual crime case involving 194 minors across Finland, excluding Åland Islands. A man in his thirties from the Pirkanmaa region is currently in custody.

The investigation focused on the anonymous video chat platform Omegle, where users can engage in video conversations without registration. Police indicated that the suspect allegedly solicited children to perform sexual acts during these video interactions. While the main service was shut down in 2023, several similar sites under the name Omegle remain operational.

According to Crime Commissioner Petri Lamppu of the Southwest Finland Police, the primary server used for these crimes was American-based and was examined during the investigation. He emphasized that even if one site is closed, numerous analogous platforms still exist online.

Miia Lehtinen, a police inspector from the National Police Board, refrained from naming specific services but cautioned parents to adhere to age restrictions associated with various applications. Speaking in general terms, she pointed out that potential offenders are likely to seek out children in the same spaces where they spend their leisure time.

Lehtinen stressed that online sexual crimes should not be underestimated, noting that the experience itself can be traumatizing, and any explicit images can circulate online. Furthermore, there is a risk of online encounters leading to in-person meetings.

Commissioner Lamppu revealed that among the identified victims, the majority are under 13 years old, with the youngest being just six. While the police do not have precise insights into how children discovered the Omegle platform, it is known that they often communicate about such sites, which are easy to navigate and anonymous.
