Police investigate extensive human trafficking case involving 43-year-old suspect in Helsinki area
Police are currently investigating an extensive criminal case described by the lead investigator as exceptional. The primary suspect is a 43-year-old man living in the Helsinki metropolitan area. He is suspected of severe and basic forms of human trafficking, aggravated and basic forms of rape, drug offenses, and economic crimes.
The investigation was initiated after a tip about human trafficking was submitted to the police through the Finnish Immigration Service, following the victim’s contact with Migri. The charges have expanded as the preliminary investigation progressed, leading to the suspect’s arrest in August, where he remains in custody.
This case, characterized as complex, involves human trafficking allegations occurring in Espoo and Kirkkonummi between early 2020 and August 2024. Detailed information regarding the case or the extent of the alleged crimes has yet to be disclosed, according to Hannu Kortelainen, a senior police officer in Helsinki. He noted that generally, human trafficking cases pertain to either labor or sexual exploitation, but this situation involves both.
In addition to the primary suspect, there are around five others under investigation. The police have been collaborating with law enforcement agencies from several European countries. Allegations of the committed crimes have also surfaced in Helsinki and Vantaa, with one aggravated rape reported to have occurred abroad. Economic crime suspicions date back to 2017.
The date for filing charges in the Western Uusimaa District Court is set for mid-March. The primary suspect has prior convictions, including a 2016 sentence in Oulu District Court for over two years, linked to serious fraud and tax offenses involving two construction companies. He has also been previously convicted of DUI in 2005.
