First emergency call of 2024 received by Iceland’s President Halla Tómasdóttir at Bessastöðum

The first Emergency Call of 2024 was received today at Bessastöðum by Iceland’s President Halla Tómasdóttir, marking the start of a fundraising effort by local rescue teams. The initiative, known as “Neyðarkall,” aims to support the operations of rescue squads and runs from today until November 3.

The formal ceremony saw both President Tómasdóttir and her husband, Björn Skúlason, welcoming the first call. Introducing this year’s emergency call, Ragnar Jón Hrólfsson highlighted the campaign’s significance. The initiative originated in 2006, making this the 19th occurrence.

Jón Þór Víglundsson, spokesperson for the rescue organization Landsbjörg, emphasized the importance of this fundraising effort, stating that the proceeds directly benefit the rescue teams involved. The Emergency Call campaign will be available at major retailers throughout the municipalities.

This annual undertaking not only raises crucial funds for rescue operations but also fosters community awareness of the challenges faced by local rescue teams. As such, it symbolizes both solidarity and the collective effort of Icelandic society to support emergency services.
