Finnish world-class rower Joel Naukkarinen was returning from a training session in Alicante, Spain, when he learned that his training facility back in Finland was on fire. “My partner told me over the phone that the building is being destroyed. She and many family members gathered at the scene,” recalled Naukkarinen, who received the news of the blaze while abroad.

Naukkarinen has broken numerous Finnish indoor rowing records in his competitive career and recently won a gold medal at the Indoor Rowing World Championships in Prague. He is also a member of the Finnish national rowing team, aspiring to qualify for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, where coastal rowing will make its debut.

The training center, located in Kouvola’s Ummeljoki area, was situated in the yard of Naukkarinen’s childhood home. According to the on-duty fire chief, the fire severely damaged the building known as Naukkarinen’s cabin, which spanned around 400 square meters and had been used for events and storage.

Over the years, Naukkarinen had developed part of the facility into a training center not only for himself but also for other national team indoor rowers, including his partner, Iida Niemi. “My athletic career started in those spaces,” Naukkarinen expressed, emphasizing the place’s significance.

He has equipped the center for rowing training since his teenage years and now, at 31, relies on it for much of his supplementary rowing training. The financial value of the ruined equipment is not yet known, although he noted the investment has totaled tens of thousands of euros. The cause of the fire remains unclear. Naukkarinen was set to return to Finland from Spain on Thursday, stating, “I’m uncertain how this will impact my plans or if I will have a training place there anymore.”
