Police have initiated enhanced monitoring in Tampere and Jyväskylä to improve public order and safety. The intensified surveillance began in Tampere on Monday and in Jyväskylä on Tuesday. Officers are monitoring streets and shopping centers following concerns about deteriorating street safety highlighted during a security seminar held by the Central Finland Police at the beginning of October.

Representatives from Tampere and Jyväskylä identified street safety and disruptive behavior as significant concerns during the seminar. In response, police decided to expedite their focus on this issue, allocating resources for more visible enforcement, according to Harri Nojonen, Chief Inspector of the Police Control and Alert Sector.

As a result of this heightened surveillance, police have issued multiple fines early in the week for public drinking and possession of various items illicitly. Nojonen reported that some weapons were also confiscated during this operation. In urban areas, consuming alcohol in public places can lead to penalties, particularly if it creates a disturbance.

According to the Public Order Act, drinking alcohol in public areas, such as streets, squares, parks, beaches, and sports fields, is prohibited. Public spaces also include establishments like offices, shopping malls, restaurants, and other venues accessible to the public. However, restrictions may not apply in all parks as long as drinking does not significantly hinder others’ use of the area.

Police can issue a fixed fine of 40 euros for drinking in public. In Tampere, several individuals were apprehended, outstanding warrants were addressed, and a child welfare report was filed. In Jyväskylä, police have warned several individuals due to disturbances. Enhanced monitoring will continue in Tampere into Wednesday, and in Jyväskylä through Thursday.
