Increasing demand for warm vacations among Danes due to poor summer weather at home
The prospect of a sunny vacation by the pool or sea is increasingly appealing to Danes, as opposed to enduring rainy weather at home. This has led to a significant demand for trips abroad, especially to warmer destinations, as reported by the country’s largest travel agencies.
Sune Lindholdt, who was vacationing in his summer house on Bornholm with his family, decided to change their plans due to the poor summer weather. They had been on Bornholm for over a week, hoping for sunshine, but were disappointed. Frustrated with the cold 16-degree weather at the beach near Sandvig, they decided to book a last-minute trip to Mallorca.
Despite warnings from travel companies for Danes to lower their expectations of destinations, price, and comfort when making last-minute bookings, many are unconcerned about the destination, as long as it is warm. Emma Møller, a 23-year-old student from Copenhagen, expressed that her only requirement for a holiday is sun, a pool, and good food. She has already visited Crete and Bulgaria in June, and is now eyeing Turkey for her third last-minute trip this summer.
Sune Lindholdt and his family were also not fussy about their destination, as long as it was hot. Despite a limited offering due to high demand, they managed to find a family-friendly hotel with suitable facilities for their children. Despite paying a premium for their last-minute booking, they feel lucky to have found a good deal.
This surge in demand for warmer vacations comes as global temperatures have set records for 13 consecutive months, according to the EU’s climate service, Copernicus. While Denmark experiences heavier rainfall, countries such as Italy and Greece are issuing warnings about extremely high temperatures.
