A man who fatally assaulted his grandfather in Oulu, Finland, has been determined to be legally sane according to a psychiatric evaluation. The prosecutor is seeking a prison sentence of at least ten years for manslaughter. The incident occurred last February when the man attacked his 89-year-old grandfather in the Isko district of Oulu, striking him multiple times on the head with a metal snow shovel. The grandfather succumbed to his injuries.

In a ruling issued in June, the district court found the man guilty of causing his grandfather’s death but did not address the specific charges or potential punishment at that time. Instead, it ordered a psychiatric assessment, which has now been completed. The evaluation concluded that the man was of sound mind during the incident, meaning he understood his actions and their consequences.

This information was revealed during court proceedings today. The prosecutor stated that the man should receive at least a ten-year prison sentence for manslaughter and should remain in custody until the verdict is delivered, as the act reflects his aggression and impulsivity. A clear motive for the attack has not emerged during the investigation or court proceedings; however, it is believed that the defendant’s personal issues, including substance abuse, may have influenced his actions.

The man has acknowledged the act of violence and the death of his grandfather but, according to his defense, he claims it was not manslaughter but rather a homicide committed under mitigating circumstances. The defense also asserts that the man has no recollection of the events in question. The district court is expected to deliver its verdict later today.
