Sweden proposes citizenship applicants recognize Israel’s right to exist and embrace Judeo-Christian values
A proposal from a faction within the Christian Democrats (KD) in Sweden suggests that applicants for Swedish citizenship should recognize Israel’s right to exist and embrace the Judeo-Christian values that underpin Swedish democracy. Alice Teodorescu Måwe highlighted that the Jewish community in Sweden feels increasingly vulnerable and targeted amid rising pro-Palestinian demonstrations.
Teodorescu Måwe pointed out that similar measures have already been implemented in a German state, emphasizing that many participating in these demonstrations do not support values commonly accepted in Sweden. She expressed concerns over the current citizenship process, which she believes lacks sufficient requirements, resulting in a casual issuance of citizenship.
To address these concerns, Teodorescu Måwe is part of a working group within KD, which will propose measures to strengthen societal cohesion in Sweden. She affirmed her commitment to advocating for these changes internally within the party.
The proposal will be assessed by the working group before being taken up by the party. Meanwhile, Migration Minister Johan Forssell confirmed that the Christian Democrats have not yet raised this issue with the government, which is already exploring stricter citizenship requirements. He stressed the importance of addressing anti-democratic, anti-Semitic, and racist ideologies at an earlier stage than the current citizenship process, which begins only after individuals have lived in Sweden for several years. The government is also conducting an investigation into “lack of good conduct” to enable the expulsion of individuals who do not respect the values of Swedish society.
