New university set to open in Vejle, Denmark, focusing on IT and STEM programs
If all goes as planned, the first students could walk through the doors of a brand-new university in Vejle, Denmark, in 2026. The University of Southern Denmark (Syddansk Universitet) has announced the establishment of a new campus in Vejle, focusing specifically on IT and STEM programs.
University rector Jens Ringsmose expressed excitement about the development, highlighting that it is an announcement they have long awaited. “We are incredibly pleased to begin recruiting for our new campus in Vejle, and soon we will also start attracting students for our upcoming programs,” he stated.
Starting in 2026, students will be able to pursue bachelor’s degrees in fields such as Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Software Engineering, and Interactive Technology Engineering on the new campus. Master’s programs are expected to be available by 2028.
The choice of Vejle for this campus is strategic, as there is a significant demand for IT specialists in the local area and across the Triangle Region, according to Ringsmose. Partnerships with local companies, including Lego, which has its headquarters in nearby Billund, will play a crucial role. Lego has contributed to financing research centers at the new university, with upcoming center leaders being recruited as “Lego Chairs.” While the university will independently govern its academic and research agendas, ongoing discussions with Lego and other partners will influence the skill sets and profiles of future graduates.
Vejle Municipality has invested 100 million Danish kroner to support the campus establishment, a culmination of years of efforts to bring the university to the area. Mayor Jens Ejner Christensen emphasized the importance of developing local IT talent to drive business growth and innovation, hoping that students will remain in the region after graduation. The new university is planned to be located at the harbor, specifically at the Nordkajen industrial area.
