Two members of Iceland’s parliament are now independent following Jakob Frímann Magnússon’s departure from the People’s Party today. This announcement was made at the start of a parliamentary session this morning. Jakob had served as the party’s lead candidate in the last elections, but it had already been indicated that he would not be the party’s candidate in the upcoming elections.

Jakob is the second parliamentarian to leave a political group as the election term draws to a close. Last week, Bjarni Jónsson announced his exit from the Left-Green Movement, and a similar announcement regarding his departure was also made during the parliamentary session this morning.

In other local news, there are increasing reports of children being born experiencing nicotine withdrawal, and the police are investigating the death of a woman in her seventies. The city of Reykjavik is preparing to hand over land for an airport to the city council.

Interestingly, a recent survey reveals that 66% of the population has never gone swimming in the ocean, and tensions are rising as educators are struggling to meet salary demands, leading to expectations of a potential strike. Meanwhile, the Democracy Party has introduced the top three candidates on their list for the upcoming elections. Weather forecasts indicate a mix of sleet and rain across many regions, while one individual has been arrested following a serious assault in Breiðholt.
