A new supercomputer named Gefion, one of the world’s most powerful AI computing systems, was officially launched by King Frederik at Copenhagen Airport on Wednesday morning. This advanced technology, developed in partnership with Nvidia, features exceptionally powerful chips, enabling it to perform complex analyses not possible with standard computers.

Gefion is designed to aid in various significant research areas, including pharmaceutical development and accelerating the green transition. Among the initial six projects utilizing Gefion is one from the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI), aimed at developing a regional weather model powered by artificial intelligence. Senior researcher Leif Denby highlighted that this capability will enhance the DMI’s ability to issue timely weather warnings, ultimately improving preparedness for dangerous weather events.

Denby explained the utility of using the supercomputer for “what-if” scenarios, allowing for better preparation and response strategies. This not only benefits emergency services but also enhances opportunities for generating renewable energy by predicting optimal conditions for solar and wind energy collection.

In addition, researchers at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) are excited about employing Gefion to explore how carbon dioxide can be converted into sustainable fuels. Professor Tejs Vegge noted that access to the supercomputer will enable the study of specific enzymes capable of transforming CO2 into usable chemicals with unprecedented accuracy and speed, potentially leading to the production of fuels like methanol.

Besides DTU and DMI, institutions such as the University of Copenhagen, Go Autonomous, and Teton have also gained access to the Gefion supercomputer, underlining its significance in driving forward research and innovation in Denmark’s green future.
