The farmhouse, built in 1870, is surrounded by lush fruit trees and is just a few hundred meters from the North Sea. Klithedegården, located in Husby Klitplantage, represents the dream of Katharina and Sören Lethmann, a young couple from Hannover, Germany, about 500 kilometers away. They plan to move to Denmark’s west coast soon.

“Our daughters should grow up surrounded by nature, with more space and freedom. They need to learn that tomatoes, cucumbers, and potatoes do not just come from the supermarket,” Katharina explains as she surveys the garden. Their youngest daughter, just seven months old, sleeps in a carrier on her mother’s chest, while their three-year-old plays with the family’s friendly black Labrador.

Klithedgården operates as a Bed & Breakfast, welcoming both pets and children. It is approximately a thirty-minute drive from Holstebro and is currently for sale. The couple hopes to buy the property and manage it with the support of the girls’ grandmother, who will also relocate.

Sören, trained as a social educator, and Katharina, who works in the German tourism sector, are part of a growing trend of Germans moving to Denmark. The number of Germans living in Denmark has increased from 25,000 to over 33,500 in just five years, drawn by the prospect of a more liberated lifestyle.

“We have received a warm welcome, even before moving. It’s charming here and uncomplicated, unlike in Germany where high costs and lower salaries make it hard for families to make ends meet,” Katharina notes.

Though they haven’t signed a contract yet, the couple dreams of making the move by 2025.
