Minister Jóhannsson assures no delays in budget process despite lack of parliamentary majority in Iceland

The Minister of Finance does not expect any delays in the budget preparation process, despite the government’s lack of a parliamentary majority. Sigurður Ingi Jóhannsson emphasized the need for increased independence in parliamentary procedures given the current situation.

During a government meeting, he introduced the fifth supplementary budget bill of the year, which encompasses additional proposals, including mileage fees and support loans for companies in Grindavík, as well as the repeal of legislation concerning the state-owned bank.

Sigurður Ingi noted that optimism remains among parliament members regarding the completion of the budget process. He stated that the timeline is tight, but they have structured their efforts to meet the November 15 deadline. In light of the situation, he expressed confidence in the efficiency of the parliamentary committees involved, as they proceed with their discussions in the upcoming days.

He expressed his belief that the budget bill will not face delays, reiterating the necessity for parliament to operate more independently under the current circumstances.
