There was a festive atmosphere as a food truck from the Food Bank made its inaugural visit to the Dansk Rehabilitering shelter, located just outside Fjerritslev. Sofia Kaa, a resident grappling with severe PTSD, described the event as reminiscent of Christmas, expressing her excitement for the arrival of fresh produce and dairy products.

The shelter received not only breakfast items but also a variety of vegetables, marking the first of weekly deliveries aimed at enhancing the culinary experiences of the 18 residents. Tine, another resident with PTSD, highlighted the significance of this support in their recovery journey, noting that receiving nutritious food is a fantastic help.

This initiative is part of the Food Bank’s new route in Northern Jutland, expanding its reach to distribute surplus food from manufacturers and stores to more social organizations. While residents previously received three daily meals, the new supplies offer greater variety in their cooking endeavors. The arrival of a specific ingredient, green peppers, delighted Sofia as it allowed her to complete her vegetable dish.

The shelter’s director, Nico Mølgaard Pedersen, welcomed the fresh stocks, pointing out how crucial this support is, given their limited daily budget. The Food Bank aims to provide 425,000 free meals to socially vulnerable citizens in the region, contributing to a national total of over three million meals annually.

The Food Bank works to reduce food waste and promote social equality by collecting and redistributing surplus food across the country, which amounts to over 1,300 tons transformed into 3.4 million meals each year since its establishment in 2008. With the expansion to Northern Jutland, demand for these free food deliveries has surged, already creating a waiting list for potential recipients.
