Minja Koskela is a strong candidate to become the new chair of the Left Alliance. Before her selection, she was asked about her plans for leading the party after the successful tenure of Li Andersson. A first-term member of parliament, Koskela cites her high motivation and teamwork skills as key strengths.

“The task of a party chair is to promote the issues that members have collectively outlined. It cannot be done by a lone wolf. Moreover, I am someone who passionately engages with issues and is not afraid of even tough discussions in the political arena. I thrive under pressure,” Koskela states. The media has referred to her as a “perfect representative of the red-green bubble.”

Born in 1987 in Heinävesi, Koskela holds a doctorate in music and a master’s degree in social sciences. She believes that maintaining support in the upcoming elections hinges on strong candidate lists and effective campaign programs. Koskela emphasizes the importance of focusing on substantial content in politics, having discussed labor movements and economic policies extensively in parliament. “Talking about issues is my strength, and I will continue to engage with politics in that way. I have no control over the labels others place on me,” she adds.

Koskela acknowledges her weaknesses lie in time management, mentioning she has pondered entering the leadership race for a long time, especially for family reasons, as she has a young child. She is currently in a relationship with fellow parliament member Timo Furuholm.

According to Koskela, no one is fully prepared for the role of party chair, but growth into the position is possible. “People often ask if Lin’s big shoes are intimidating, and yes, that’s a concern for everyone. However, I believe that next to those big shoes, you just need to put on your own sneakers, lace them up, and get to work,” she concludes.
