In a remote area far from highways, crowded offices, and busy trains, a unique job opportunity is available on the small islands of Ertholmene, home to just 90 residents of all ages. The islands, Frederiksø and Christiansø, which are connected by a bridge, offer three job openings for individuals willing to live and work in Denmark’s easternmost inhabited point.

The Danish military manages Christianø, seeking an administrative employee, a tradesman, and a teacher. This presents a chance to work in a distinctive environment. Laura Kofod, a seventh-grade student, describes the close-knit learning atmosphere, noting that her current school in Copenhagen has 21 students in her class, while Christiansø’s entire school serves only 14 students.

Living on Christiansø is only possible if hired by the military. The islands are located about 20 kilometers northeast of Bornholm, with a one-hour ferry ride to Gudhjem operating year-round. The intimate school setting fosters strong relationships between students and teachers due to its small size, which facilitates personalized learning.

Søren Thiim Andersen, the island’s administrator, explains that while life may seem idyllic, small issues can escalate in such a small community. He hopes to attract families to increase the population beyond 100, as children play a vital role in sustaining the school.

Successful applicants will enjoy benefits uncommon in the kingdom, including no municipal taxes, resulting in an effective tax rate around ten percent. Andersen emphasizes the importance of community traditions, such as seasonal celebrations and local gatherings, emphasizing that living and working in Christiansø is part of a broader vision for a greener future, with plans for new facilities and harbor renovations.
