The Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB) has released an updated version of its brochure titled “If Crisis or War Comes.” Building strong relationships with neighbors can be beneficial in times of crisis, as illustrated by the experience during Hurricane Katrina. Individuals with close ties to their neighbors managed to endure and recover from the disaster more effectively.

However, the feelings people have about their neighbors vary widely. While some have friendly relationships, others actively avoid interaction. According to Daniel Ek, living in closer quarters can increase stress and anxiety levels. Historically, humans lived in tribes where everyone was familiar with one another, but many now seek privacy and fear conflicts that may arise from frequent encounters.

Ek suggests that individuals should seek their own reasons for wanting to connect with neighbors, as doing so can foster a sense of security over time. Building rapport enhances comfort; one might feel less anxious when at home, knowing their neighbors better. He emphasizes that neighbors are not threats and that familiarity can help create a more relaxed living environment.

In a recent video, Ek recommends three strategies for overcoming neighbor-related fears, encouraging community engagement as a means to enrich personal well-being and safety.
